EC2 introduces a new paradigm for web hosting. By allowing developers to scale their number of machines up or down within minutes, it offers the capability to create distributed and scalable applications that run in the cloud. EC2 is flexible, reliable, secure, and most importantly cheap! By only paying for the resources that you actually use, you can bring your multi-server application to market much cheaper than ever before, and maintain an extremely high level of quality and availability. Let's take a look at some of the basic concepts of how this service works.

Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers.

At RightScale we are committed to supporting educational uses of cloud computing. Education is in our DNA. Our CTO and co-founder, Thorsten von Eicken, was a professor of computer science at Cornell University before launching his career in technology start-ups. We believe working with educational institutions will support new applications for cloud computing, and offer the next generation more options for deploying their scientific or business applications.
Our education program provides RightScale’s Cloud Management Platform to institutions that want to harness the scalable, on-demand power of cloud computing. The RightScale Platform provides:
UCSB Computer Science Department
The UCSB Computer Science Department has created the EUCALYPTUS project to foster community research and development of Elastic/Utility/Cloud service implementation technologies, resource allocation strategies, service level agreement (SLA) mechanisms and policies, and usage models.
Harvard Medical School
Harvard Medical School is using RightScale as part of their ‘Translational Science in the Cloud’ seminar. The participants will conduct a series of exercises in biomedical discovery and translational science using cloud computing technology. To accomplish these objectives, teams will create, manage and use a ‘translational research laboratory’ on the cloud based on emerging cloud technology and services.
RightScale’s automated system management, pre-packaged and re-usable components, and recommended practices are proven as best-of-breed. The RightScale Cloud Management Platform currently supports Amazon Web Services in the U.S. and in Europe, Eucalyptus, Flexiscale, and GoGrid. We are also working with Rackspace and its cloud offerings. With the RightScale Platform, any university or educational laboratory can tap the enormous power of cloud computing for a virtually infinite, cost-effective, pay-as-you-go IT infrastructure.
We're currently evaluating educational institutions for participation in this program which offers free usage of the RightScale Website or Grid editions. If you or your school is interested in being reviewed to participate, please contact us with your .edu address.
The RightScale Platform enables you to run your entire web business on cloud computing infrastructures, including Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, SQS), with reliability, scalability, and performance. Take complete control of your deployment with our powerful and flexible web-based platform.
The RightScale Platform is available in editions starting at $500 a month with a one-time integration and access fee of $2,500. We also offer professional services for consulting and custom development based on the RightScale Platform.
